Desalination Plant gets approved

It took 11 years for the California State government and Coastal Commission to finally wake up to the fact that we need to harvest fresh water from the Ocean... Here's a little background. Over the last three years California has been in a drought, which is not uncommon for the state of California. Southern California imports a large percentage of the water it uses from Northern California and the Colorado River. In addition, during the Clinton Administration there was a large push in removing dams on the various rivers through out California which used to capture natural flow of water and was used for various municipal water districts.

So it's pretty much a fact that Southern California needs to develop multiple sources of fresh water. But what took so long? In 1998 the former Mayor of Carlsbad and Poseidon Resources (the owner of a power plant in South Carlsbad) outlined a proposal to build a locally controlled, drought proof, high quailty, source of drinking water for this region. After 10 years of planning including 5 years of being in the State's permit process the Carlsbad Desalination Plant has now received final approvals.

What is a Desalination Plant

Desalination is the process of removing salt (and virutally all other mineral, biological, or organic chemical and compounds) from seawater. As a former Auxilary Engineer in the Navy I actually used to maintain and operate small scale Desalination plants. Desalination plants are also used in over 120 Countries, including Italy, Australia, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Japan, China, India, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. Currently there are over 21,000 desalination plants worldwide creating Billions of gallions of water each day.

Yet even with San Diego County being one of the worlds leaders in the development of modern day reverse osmosis technology, the State and County has consistantly dragged it's feet in providing a large scale source of fresh water, until this last week.  The will of the people finally prevailed!
