On March 8th, a new law will go into effect in the city of Escondido that will fine Car owners who park their vehicles in their front yards. The fine will be for $40 and if a repeat offender gets 3 tickets in 12 months they will be charged with a misdemeanor! Here is my suggestion for repeat offenders:

Interesting post. I have some mixed feelings about this legislation. On the one hand, I think people should be able to do what they want with their own properties (within reason, of course) and I don’t as a rule approve of legislation that infringes on the rights of property owners. On the other hand, parking your car in your front yard does affect the perceived value of homes nearby (especially if an agent just happens to be showing a nearby home while you are parked).

I’m all for keeping cars off of the street when parked makes for a much cleaner and probably safer neighborhood. BUT when government has to get involved to police this also its in my mind silly. It’s just not neccessary and should not be a misdemeaner at all! Just my view of things, in Tucson it’s nice when neighbors keep the cars off the street most of our street our decent width but to have a law is not needed.

I, like Ben, agree with the fact that legislation is playing a dangerous game when it comes to dictating what homeowners can/can’t do with their own properties. Fortunately it does serve a purpose and prevents some really dis-tasteful and absurd things from happening, but it can also be quite ridiculous. I personaly love the ones (homeowners association) that tell you that no pick up trucks can be in the driveway. They must be parked in the garage. So trivial…

I cant really decide. On the one hand I hate the government getting involved in stuff like this. On the other hand it doesnt seem like that much trouble to not park in your front yard. I assume they mean in the yard and not in the driveway.

And where would the car owner park his/her car? if he/ she doesn’t have a garage.
By the way, funny suggestion. lol

Cincy,
The issue is NOT that they don’t have a place to park. It is that they have Illegially converted their Garages (the places they should be parking) into additional bedrooms, appartments, or rental units. Then they are gripping that they don’t have anywhere to park all of their cars. I have seen as many as 13-14 cars and trucks associated with one home. These homes are not big either… Usually under 1500 sq/ft!
